Twain writes with many quirks, but two that are most commonly seen was his use of social commentary and sarcasm in his writing(CD). (Social commentary is the act of using rhetorical means to provide a thought to something in society.) Mark Twain uses social commentary in his novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. During this time in the story, an official person has come to visit the city. Admiring the official, the people of the town were showing off and tried to make themselves seem important like the official too. (SPP) Evidence can be found in the story when Twain writes, “... showing off, with all sorts of official bustlings and activities, giving order, delivering, judgements, discharging directions…” (Chapter 4). This piece of text proves that Twain is writing with social commentary and is making fun of people who are over exaggerating and trying for people to think their job is so hard. People can relate to this because unfortunately everyone knows that one person who over exaggerates or who thinks they are super important. Another quirk Mark Twain writes with is sarcasm. In the same novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain shows that he writes with sarcasm. In the book the author is describing an official, which is very well respected and has high ranking, that has just walked into the building (CX). Proof can be found in the story when Twain writes, “ He was from Constantinople, twelve miles away - so he had …show more content…
Usually classic authors have a certain specialty they use in their work, so one thing Steinbeck uses in his writing is symbolism (CD). Symbolism is anything that represents a larger concept. In this case, in the fictional Novella, The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the pearl is an example of symbolism. The pearl shows that wealth and knowledge will give people opportunity. In chapter two, when Kino and Juana found the pearl, they were a poor family that was not very popular around town. Things changed for them after the pearl was found. “All manner of people grew interested in Kino-people with things to sell and people with favors to ask” (23). This passage is important because it tells how unfair people treated their family at first. Now that they have wealth and power from the pearl, they are one of the most popular people in the town. This shows symbolism because the pearl represents this dramatic change from being poor to being rich when they found the pearl. Ultimately the reader learns that the knowledge and money someone has determines whether someone will have chances and opportunities in life. Another thing Steinbeck uses in his writing is social inequality. Social inequality is based on social issues and unequalness between different classes in society. For example, in The Pearl, the doctor represents a person with wealth from an upper class, so he is considered the “haves”. While Kino and Juana represent the poor,
