Flaws Of Franklin D Roosevelt

Throughout Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, he raised the national debt to 236 billion dollars, in addition he transformed the American presidency (Baughman). Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born January 30, 1882 in Hyde Park, New York and was the 32nd president of the United States of America. Franklin D. Roosevelt was mainly elected for four terms, the longest in U.S history to end the Depression, but he failed to do so. He created the New Deal which provided the three R’s, relief, reform, and recovery. Not everyone received recovery and care from the New Deal and people living in poverty remained helpless because they were known as the “forgotten man”. He does not deserve to be counted as one of the greatest presidents. Human rights are the most important and crucial type of right, they are clearly stated in the Bill of Rights and Constitution; all men are created and born equal. Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted the United States to join World War II, but the people did not want to get involved after the last war. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombing killed over 2,400 people, sank four battleships, damaged ten warships and completely obliterated 200 planes. Soon after the United States declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941 (Resch). Some people theorized that FDR had prior knowledge to these attacks and let it fold out because it could be used as an excuse to join the war. As a result, Franklin D. Roosevelt sent more than 100,000 Japanese-Americans to internment camps spread throughout the country (Stock). Conditions were horrible and even Japanese people with U.S citizenship were sent. After the war, FDR personally apologized and gave each person 20,000 dollars as compensation (Stock). Roosevelt long rule as president and his decisions, he shaped the future role of the presidency in an unacceptable way. The Supreme Court repeatedly rejected a lot of FDR’s New Deal policies so he decided to pack the court. The idea known as the “court-packing plan”, was a proposal set by FDR that gave him the power to select as many new judges as he wants. This was because FDR wanted judges that would agree with the New Deal programs that he wanted to put out. Many of FDR’s own supporters and people of his own party believed what he did caused an unbalance of power (Levy). FDR was in office from 1933 to 1945, the longest in U.S history. He was the first president to break the two-year term rule, which later influences future presidents to act unconstitutionally on decisions. Additionally, presidents to not have the power to negotiate treaties with other countries without the approval of the Senate. So what FDR did was he negotiated “agreements” not treaty so it is perfectly constitutional right? Wrong, Congress was furious and this happened again when he closed all the banks, known as bank holiday just because he believed it was necessary and because it had to be done (Doris). We cannot have a president making decision just because he believes it is a state of emergency and make rash decisions without the approval of everyone. Not to mention Executive Order 9066 when he forced everyone with Japanese ancestry to be relocated into internments camps.
