According to an interviewee, she believes that every single food is medicine and that people must take into account the food we eat every day (Lucy, personal communication, Nov 20, 2013). From a different perspective, a younger interviewee sees foods as medicines are foods that have health benefits (Nguyen, personal communication, Nov 18, 2013). Another difference between the two generations is that younger people prefer taking chemical pills rather than eating foods that have the same benefits like middle-aged adults do (Nguyen, personal communication, Nov 18, 2013). However, people from both generations agree that they would research and find out more information about the benefits of some foods online or from books and other trusted sources before believing instead of trusting advices from older generations like their ancestors do (Nguyen, personal communication, Nov 18, 2013) (Lucy, personal communication, Nov 20, 2013). Moreover, they both also agree that there are some false rumours on the benefits of some foods such as shark fins, tiger bones and rhino horns. One interviewee explained that people believe in such wrong rumour because they think these deadly animals would provide them strength and health (Nguyen, personal communication, Nov 18, 2013). This belief is very widespread in China and Taiwan (Evon, personal communication, Nov 18, 2013), which lead to the declination of these animals and push them near extinction. Moreover, the act of shark finning, which only take the shark fin and throw the entire shark bodies into the water is considered to be extremely cruel against animal …show more content…
They developed nutraceuticals and functional foods to meet the demand of people who are interested in the health benefits of foods. According to Health Canada, “functional food is similar in appearance to, or may be, a conventional food that is consumed as part of a usual diet, and is demonstrated to have physiological benefits and/or reduce the risk of chronic disease beyond basic nutritional functions” (What are Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals?, n.d). And the definition a nutraceuticals is a “product isolated or purified from foods that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with foods, which have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease” (What are Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals?, n.d). These products would contain some natural chemical found in foods that have health benefits including antioxidants such as resveratrol from red grape products and flavonoids inside tea (What are Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals?, n.d). Some of them help people increase the fibre intake and unsaturated fatty acids intake (Omega 3 and Omega 6), which would increase the healthiness of their diet. According to one of the interviewee, these products interest people because including original healthy foods in diets can sometimes be very expensive and time-consuming (Lucy, personal communication, Nov 20, 2013). Along with health benefits, the production of these products also supports economic development in rural communities because this market is growing in a pace that outruns the pace of traditional processed food markets (Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals - Canadian Industry, n.d). However, these products also raise concerns on how they are regulated by laws to protect the rights of Canadians and the development of the industry.
