Physical abuse of elderly patients in nursing homes
When family members leave their loved ones in nursing homes, it means they have big trust toward the care givers and generally the company. The family members have expectations for the health professionals to perform the best quality care as well as having high level of ethical and moral behaviors for their loved ones. When health professionals perform the best care and treat the residents in the proper way, not only it gets easier for them but it can also help the company’s successes. Additionally, the care givers won’t face chargers if the follow the rules and regulations of the nursing homes they work for. Based on elder’s abuse laws, both federal and state laws address elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation (Center for Elders and the Courts (CEC) (2012) (Watson, 2013).
According to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, elder abuse refers to any knowing, intentional, or negligent act by a caregiver or any other person that causes harm to a vulnerable adult. Physical abuse in health care setting includes but is not limited to inflicting physical pain or injury on a senior by slapping, bruising, restraining an elder either through physical or chemical means.

According to Watson, E. (2013) the signs and symptoms of physical abuse in nursing homes are Bruising, burns, broken bones, lacerations, scars, welts—check symmetry/asymmetry. In addition, some residents could also behave differently because of the pain they go though from the injuries. For instance, some residents could complain about pain and for those who can’t speak looking for facial expressions may be a great way to tell.
