Charles Dickens, a classic novelist , was born in Portsmouth England on February 7, 1812. Charles was born to John and Elizabeth Dickens whom were fortunate enough to send Charles to a private school at the age of nine. However, later on Charles’ father , inspiration for the character of Mr. Micawber in another of Charles’ classics David Copperfield was imprisoned for bad debt . The imprisonment resulted in the rest of the Dickens family moving to Marshalsea and Charles’ was taken out of school to work in Warren 's Blacking Factory to help his family. Oliver , in many ways, is an unrealistically portrayed character. He is virtuous and pure in a corrupted society in London, a place where incorruptibility was too unlikely. The idea that Dickens’ tried getting across using Oliver was that the environment around is what caused the maleficence in the society , but also challenged the Victorian social view of the poor being evil at birth. But in turn, it gave off a message a little different from what was intended. Oliver’s pure mind should’ve been tainted at the orphanage, instead he ran away to find Artful Dodger , Oliver described him (Chapter 9) “ He wore a man 's coat, which reached nearly to his heels. He had turned the cuffs back . . . to get his hands out of the sleeves . . . . He was, altogether, as roistering and swaggering a young gentleman as ever stood four feet six, or something less, in his bluchers.” and Oliver still had no idea that Artful Dodger was a pickpocket , a thief.
