The concert that I will be critiquing is the late Amy Winehouse, Live at Shepherds Bush Empire in London, England. On May 29th 2007, solo artist, Amy Winehouse performed along with her backing band, a soul group called The Dap-Kings. I chose to view this concert because Amy is my all-time favorite jazz/ soul singer. Amy performed songs from her masterpiece album "Back To Black" and a few songs from her debut album, "Frank".
The Dap-Kings, male only band, consists of Dale Davis on the bass, Zalon Thompson & Ade Omatayo as backup vocals. Robin Banerjee on the guitars, Nathan Alan playing the drums and Xantone Blacq on the keyboards. Also, Henry Collins on trumpet, James Hunt played alto saxophone and flute and Frank Walden on the baritone saxophone.

The funky beats, raw lyrics and Amy’s strong soulful vocals set the tone for a night of great music. This concert was recorded at the time when Amy was struggling with sobriety, and it shows. Also, during this show, she keeps making comments to, and looking up at a balcony from where, evidently, her husband is watching. Towards the end of the show, Amy did not continue to give her best vocal performance because she was too intoxicated. Through out her career, Amy battled her own personal demons of self hurt, drug and alcohol abuse. Winehouse died tragically on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning. This concert is certainly an accurate capturing of Amy Winehouse in concert. She 's a bit tipsy. Her in between songs banter with the crowd is all at once funny, charming and rambling. She seems to lose her train of thought a time or two, but when she sings, there is no denying the magic and power of her voice. Her wonderful backing band, Dap- Kings does a stellar job throughout the entire show and her home turf of London is a very appreciative and supportive
