A leader’s success in this economic world depends on their effective communication skills. The problem is with most people is not their lack of ability to communicate; the problem is that they have not mastered the skill. There are two reasons why is happens so often: (1) we take communication for granted. Ever since we were born we have been try to communicate with those that are around us. With this much practice you would think that by the time we were put into a leadership role that we would know how to do it effectually. (2) We often think that we are better than what we really are (Hybles, 2007).

A vision statement is when a company tells you what their plans are moving forward, what they want to accomplish moving forward. What this really tells you is that they have a plan and what they are going to do to reach their goals. They are looking ahead and have a plan as to where they want to be in the next five to ten years. To me this shows that they have vision and know what they want and what they have to do to get there.

Something that makes a leader is seen in all of us. Leadership skills don’t only consist on how courageous or strong you are. When I think of Claudius, the cliché “All is fair in love and war” comes to mind. Claudius, right or wrong, obviously thought of himself as a better leader than his brother and took drastic action to prove it. Claudius secretly murdered his brother, King Hamlet, and then married the dead king’s wife, Gertrude, consequently becoming the new king of Denmark. Though murder is not how I would approach the situation, I cannot say this sole act made Claudius a poor leader. Many great leaders have gained their positions through murder and war; furthermore, Claudius did seem to be acting in good faith on behalf of Denmark.…

A leader should be someone you look up to and who does the right thing. Anyone can be a leader, but to be a good leader you must be honest, respectful, kind and you must take responsibility of your actions whether they are right or wrong. Leadership and service go hand in hand. Leaders must serve the people they are leading. If a leader does not give back to the people he or she serves they are likely not doing a very good job of showing others how to act responsibly or what values are necessary to making their environment better.…

I do think that everyone is capable of being a leader in different situations. For those not born with leadership qualities, I think it takes time and practice to become a good leader. They may have to try harder to be charismatic, hard-working, influential, or good at speaking. I also think that people who are incapable of learning the skills of a good leader are still capable of being a leader in other ways.
