Reflective Statement
Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a novel that is greatly affected by time and place. In Colombia in the 1950’s where Gabriel Garcia-Marquez set his novel, people had different thoughts and ideals. In our class discussion, it was made clear that a woman’s virginity was important during that time period. It was a sign of purity and honor in the girl’s family. The class agreed that the townspeople did not do anything to prevent the murder of Santiago Nasar because the villagers thought it justified for the brothers of Angela Vicario to want revenge on Santiago for deflowering their sister. These strict ideals may be difficult to understand for young people today reading this novel. Colombia is a deeply religious country and views virginity as a sacred and special gift to give to one’s husband. In America, on the other hand, with regard to certain belief systems, it is important to stay a virgin, but the majority of Americans do not see virginity as a special virtue to have. In the class discussion, it was agreed that we learned more about the culture of Colombia after reading Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Due to the fact that Garcia-Marquez originates from Colombia, he portrays the society accurately and clearly for the reader to understand. A fellow classmate who was born and raised in Colombia, agrees that virginity is an important aspect in her culture. She mentioned that a girl’s virginity is still a relevant subject in Colombia today. Chronicle of a Death Foretold changed my class’s point of view on these strict ideals in other countries outside of America. Because of the fact that Colombian culture is vastly contrasting to our American culture, we simply received a glimpse as to how their culture
