The Theme Of Greed In The Pardoner's Tale

Chaucer’s classic tale, told by the Pardoner, is a story of greeds deadliness which kills the three boys that fall victim to the greed of themselves and others. This theme that greed is the root of all evil is not the only theme others are the theme of morality and hypocrisy. These themes have been echoed in many later films such as The Internet Story and The Tale of the Three Brothers. These films mimic the themes of the Pardoner’s tale as well as many aspects of the story such as their plot progression as well as nuances of their details.
The Tale of the Three Brothers recounts each brother’s journey with gifts given to them by death. These three brothers all use their gifts for their own good but only one remains untainted by sin and able to live to an old age. These brothers all show different aspects of the themes within The Pardoner’s Tale. No matter what the brothers did, they could not escape death but they could prolong their life by living a life free of sin and greed like the youngest brother. Unlike the older two brothers who died as the consequence to the greed in their actions. The oldest brother expands upon the theme that greed is the root of all evil. He was smart, receiving a cloak from death that can hide him from death himself. He uses his cloak to remain hidden from death until he felt his time has come, greeting death like an old friend; like the old man in The Pardoner’s Tale who is ready to die. This shows how rather than succumbing to sin, he uses his gift to lead out a quiet life. This life that is shared by the old man solidifies the theme of sin and greed being the root of all evil.
