Career Assessment In Career Development

As stated previously, the client took all three career assessments listed above. Based on John Holland’s Self-Directed Search, the client received the specific results of SEC, known as Social (14), Enterprising (14), and Conventional (13). The self-identified occupations of interest by the client were teacher, counselor, entrepreneur, clergy member, and marriage and family counselor. Those more inclined to social careers require teaching, treating or healing others. These specific results include careers very similar to the clients, listing kindergarten teacher and mental health counselor. Looking into Super’s Vocational Development, the client is moving from the stabilization stage to the consolidation stage of her vocational development. The client is in the midst of moving from her confirmed preferred career that she has developed through her actual work experience and establishment of her talents to ensure that she is in the correct vocation to taking the next best steps to move her forward to consolidation, where she will develop in that profession. In this case, the client is currently enrolled in a master’s degree program to receive a degree in school counseling to move from being a kindergarten teacher, to advancing to the next level of her career journey. Through her current work experience, the client has already identified that she prefers working in a helping position, and all three of her assessments led to careers that matched her skills, interests, and preferences. While the MBTI did not specifically indicate careers in the helping profession, it did indicate that her personality type matches those with visions that can help others and the acquirement of skills needed to implement those visions. The client stated previous that it is her desire to not only work as a counselor, but to create her own organization in the future to continue to help others. Being a school counselor is a great way to work with people, but there are options to work with non-profit organizations to serve the needs of others. To avoid disappointment of not reaching the clients goals of opening her own practice, it would be beneficial for the client to remain active in her community. She currently works with her church community, and that seems to be fulfilling her desire to work in her community. Working or volunteering with a non-profit organization could give the client the opportunity to explore working in a setting outside of school. Her scored results from the inventories not only include, teacher, but also placed her in professions where she would work with families as a counselor or as an entrepreneur to consider ways to impact her community in larger ways. Currently, the client is comfortable with where she is currently; however, to work towards more vocational development and change, she may need to step out of her comfort zone and try something new. As the career counselor, I could support her through those changes and then lead her to a professional counselor who specialized deeper in life transitions. The client is very capable of reaching her goals; it is just a matter of her being ready to explore new opportunities. After more reflection and time, I believe the client will continue to allow her roles to change and will not remain in the teaching
