E. 1. Why is it important that you make your own career choice rather than have a parent or someone else make it for you? I believe choosing a career is one of the most important decisions anyone will make in life. It is very important that I make my own career choice rather than have a parent or someone else make it for me. The career choice I make has a large influence in my life. Also, I will be the one who will spend 8 hours a day and five days a week doing the work. I know myself more than a parent or someone else, likewise, I know my talents, abilities, and interest more than anyone else. I did not realize the “calling” of my career until I had to move to a different state due to my husband relocation. Not being able to provide human services in any way and staying home terrify me. When I was hired to do the things I love, I was overjoyed and know that it is the “calling.” I have career-related goals and motivated to pursue advanced education to enhance my career. At a young age, I did not think twice and went to the college to pursue a career in medicine. I enrolled in the pre-med program and major in biology. After a few years of studying a subject I have no interest in, I was struggling in school and my grades are falling. Also, I volunteered in a hospital to learn what it likes to be working there every day. It was when I realized that I am not into this type of career. I do not like needle or blood. My body feel numb when I see the blood. Pursuing a career in medicine and being a doctor was not ideal career for me. I strongly felt that I needed to rethink my career choice. “When individuals get input from within themselves or from the environment, the communication process starts”(Sharf, 2013, p. 414).
