How many times have we planned the perfect lesson, and can’t wait to share it with the class because you just know, it will be a huge success! The time comes to do the activity and there are a couple of disruptive students in the class that are making it difficult for the rest of the class. We have all been there! When you ask most people about classroom management, the first thing they think of is student behavior. Some might think it is just the new teachers that struggle with behavior but many experienced teachers also have student behavior issues. Students view authority different today than they did years ago (Jones & Jones, 2016, p. 284). The teacher is trying everything she knows how to do like giving praise, and rewards, and even ignoring students but nothing is working. I am a big believer in NEVER ignoring bad behavior. If a student or students are behaving in an improper manner, as the leader of the class, I have to do something. In the segment, the teacher needs to improve the quality of discipline in her classroom so what can she do? A teacher analyzes and puts a lot of time into class goals and the same effort needs to be put into creating a discipline plan. Learning respectful behavior is similar to helping students learn any other skill (Classroom Management Simulation, 2016a). Going online and doing a little research on the subject might be an option, but can you find something online that is aligned to your learning goals or discipline needs? The teacher has some ideas for her discipline system but feels unsure and would like a little help to review what she has written down. I chose the option which talked about sharing my ideas with colleagues that I respect. For example, maybe other teachers are experiencing the same type of issue and as a group, you can come up with a solution that helps the both of you. Going to the administrator first is a great option, especially when you are wondering about discipline but personally, I would go to colleagues first. One of the first things she can do to cut down on the disruptions in class is to keep students engaged! When you keep the class interested in the material, there is less likely a chance of disruption because students are focusing on the lesson (Ng, 2014). Another strategy that works most of the time is practicing humor. A positive learning environment where there is laughter and happiness is key to keeping students interested and engaged in their work (Ng, 2014). One thing you do not want to do, and it is hard for many, including myself is get angry. When a teacher gets angry, it affects the learning environment in a negative way. Another important strategy for any teacher is to be fair and consistent with students when it comes to classroom management and discipline. A teacher that is inconsistent, is just like a parent that is inconsistent, and will find themselves in a classroom that is out of control (Kelly, 2016). Managing the physical classroom is another important strategy all teachers can implement. A strategy like this refers to thinking strategically when setting up the classroom, so you can see every student at all times, and consider how to group desks to maximize student engagement (Greenberg, Putnam, & Walsh, 2014).     Implications for practice from the conclusions of the study would be for teachers to use a classroom management plan that involves positive reinforcement and not public shame. When students are coming from different backgrounds, whether it be SES, race, culture, or something else, it is necessary for the teacher to be sensitive to that.
