I researched several articles and books to collect information on the inquiry-based teaching model. The inquiry-based instruction model has the students explore a new concept by generating questions, investigating the problem, observe, and apply the new concept to better understand it in a real-world situation. The role of the teacher acts as a coach guiding the learner through the questioning process and leading them to the investigation step to discover how the new concept relates to their world while working in a group setting. The inquiry-based classroom environment creates critical thinkers, life-long learners, ownership of learning and meaning to new concepts. I found this research topic to be a beneficial teaching strategy for to me to incorporate in my 8th grade math classes. I find a lot of my students not wanting to be resourceful in finding answers to their questions because they find it easier to ask me for the answer. Implementing inquiry-based instruction will lead students to becoming more creative, experimental, and take ownership in their learning (Miller, 2015). Miller (2015) conveys the classroom environment has been established it’s okay to fail and allow revisions to the students work. This type of learning environment would be an effective way to implement the inquiry-based teaching method. The students that struggle in school with the traditional teaching methods will respond well to an inquiry-based learning setting, awakening their confidence, interest, and self-esteem (Morino Institute, The YouthLearn Initiative at EDC, 2012).
