Another threat to them are getting caught in the nets of fishermen and fishing gear. Blue whales are important to the environment and ecosystem because they are at the top of the marine life food chain. Meaning, the blue whale has an important role in helping keep the overall marine environment healthy (“Blue Whale”). Sea animal are also an important part of our ecosystem. Among the primates that are endangered are chimpanzees, orangutans, black spider monkeys, and mountain gorillas. In a recent survey conducted at Fountain Central High School, out of twenty people only four people knew chimpanzees were endangered, only four knew that orangutans were endangered, only two people knew black spider monkeys were endangered, and six people knew mountain gorillas were endangered (“Endangered Animal”). Chimpanzees live in the forest of the Congo Basin with only 172,700 to 299,700 left in the wild. Two main things are threatening this species: diseases and illegal wildlife trade. Diseases affect chimpanzees just as much as they do humans. Poaching for the meat of the chimpanzee for the wealthy and the selling of baby chimpanzees as pets has become …show more content…
Even though zoos and sanctuaries protect and allow animals to reproduce, many people believe they are not the way to go about protecting endangered species. So what is the difference between them? A sanctuary is a safe place for animals to go. They insure that they will take care of any neglected, abandoned, or abused animal and keep them. There are two kinds of sanctuaries, public and private. Public sanctuaries put their animals out so people can see them and some even allow you to touch, play and get up close to the animals. Every year they are inspected by the federal government to insure that the animals in these sanctuaries have sanitary conditions, adequate enclosures, proper care, and are being fed the correct kind of food. Private sanctuaries whose animals are not displayed, are not checked on yearly because they are not run by the federal government and because of this there could be a possibility that the animals are not getting the correct kind of treatment. Zoos on the other hand are soulfully created to exhibit animals to the public. They take animals in based on which species is more favorable among the public. Zoos just do not keep the same animals and species they also sell, trade, borrow, loan out, and breed animals. Many people believe that zoos make full use of and derive benefits from animals by keeping them in captivity and exhibiting them to the public (Shea). Because of the
