When Uncle Builder describe the Emperor’s wish to have the finest palace built, Rabbit asks: “So what is the finest place?” This inquiry prompts the little animals follow Uncle Builder around for the remainder of the story; Uncle Builder explains the inspiration behind the palace’s design and shows the little animals the entirety of the Forbidden City.
Rabbits are loved across China and the world for their soft fur and cute appearance. In Chinese culture, the rabbit is one of 12 Chinese Zodiac animals,and being born in the Year of the Rabbit is considered especially auspicious by many Chinese; the rabbit symbolizes vigilance and deftness, as well as self-protection. In Chinese mythology, rabbits are also associated with the moon, since the Chinese Goddess of the Moon, Chang’e, flew to the moon with a white rabbit in her arms.
