The main topic is asking the reader the same question: “What happens to a dream deferred?” Hughes created this to show the damage a postponed dream can make to a person and others around them. This poem is an allegory considering when he asks “Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun,” he does not ask if it literally dries up, he wants the reader to know that even though they postponed the dream it is still there to pick up where they left off.
