A genetically modified crop is a crop that’s DNA has been modified by genetic engineering. The way this works is that one organisms DNA is taken and is bonded with another organisms DNA creating a “hybrid” crop. Genetically modified crops have developed tremendously over the years and has changed and impacted daily life for farmers and crop consumers. Genetically modified crops have many positive effects such as increased productivity, lowering pesticide chemicals on crops, and even helps economically. Genetically modified crops is a fast growing technique and needs to keep growing to make an impact like it already has.
First is the productivity of genetically modified crops. …show more content…
As was said earlier they help with productivity, lower pesticide chemical use, and can help economically. The productivity side is genetically modified crops can grow faster, bigger, and with more nutrients than traditional crops. This leads to more food in a faster time frame, and gives consumers more nutrients needed in daily foods. Also they help lower chemical use on plants by genetically modifying crops to have bug repellent and weed killer inside of the plant, and this substance inside is harmless to humans and animals. Also it helps save money. By not having to go to the store to get pesticide chemicals for your plants that saves money in the long run also being able to grow in the same general area saves money. Critics that doubt GM crops must be uneducated or unaware of the positive about genetically modified crops. All genetically modified crops are under heavy watch and are tested multiple times for deficiencies before they are put on store shelves (Genetically modified food Page 27/28). According to ( Tanisha Smith, WAXHAW, NC) about 70 percent of products sold on store shelves are genetically modified with at least one different DNA strand implanted in the crop. In my opinion that is a great thing and the science behind genetically modified crops should be further expanded and needs to be looked at as a new and helpful generation of the way humans grow and improve
