Sustainability and tourism are two different terms but are inter-related. Sustainability and tourism should go hand in hand in order to maintain the ecological balance on the earth thus making the planet safer from any kind of harm occurring due to any tourist activities.
Sustainability refers to the ability of sustaining the environment by not being harmful to environment and its resources. On the other hand, tourism comprises all the activities of an individual or a group of individuals while moving from the place other than its usual environment and staying there for a period of not more than a year.

John Swarbrooke, in his book Sustainable Tourism Management, mentioned about five environmental aspects, which are effected by tourism. These are: Impacts of Tourism on Environment:
Positive Negative
Provides a reason for the protection and conservation of natural habitats and wildlife because of its value as a tourism resource Tourists make use of a range of NATURAL RESOURCES for example of water resources for their baths and swimming pools using large amounts of water often in places where water is scarce.
Increases tourist awareness of environmental issues, possibly leading them to campaign or act in some other way for environmental protection Tourism can be an enemy through the over-exploitation of biological resources, trampling and damaging of vegetation through people and vehicles, air pollution from vehicle emissions etc. provides new infrastructure for a destination or upgrading the existing infrastructure Tourism may include too much infrastructure or pressure on existing infrastucture, changes in the character of built up areas through urban expansion or redevelopment, damage from building new infrastructure, people and traffic
