INTRODUCTION
Human trafficking is becoming increasingly popular nationwide due to economic hardships and supply and demand. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has become involved and created efforts to aid these individuals in slavery. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against his/her will. Many slaves from human trafficking specifically in the industry of sex have come forward with their stories and have assisted in creating documentaries and books. Many of them want the population to know what goes on and what kind of lives they had to live in order to live and escape these dangerous situations. Many of these documentaries you can find online or on netflix such as 10 seconds, At the End of Slavery, Eden, Born into Brothels, Call + Response, The Candy Shop, Chosen, Freedom Film, Half the Sky, In Plain Sight, Very Young Girls, and Trade of Innocents. Victims such as Jhinna Pinchi who have escaped sex slavery have become advocates to help spread awareness and the dangers involved in human trafficking. This was the first federal law against human trafficking and created an abundance of awareness amongst individuals all over the country. In proceeding years numerous organizations have been established to help aid victims of these crimes. A few of these organizations include Polaris, Not For Sale, International Rescue Committee, and Hope For Justice. Homeland Security itself has created the “Blue Campaign” that creates an effort against human trafficking by working with government, non-government, private organizations, and law enforcement to protects human rights such as these. One of the largest reasons human trafficking victims do not come forward is because they are not citizens of the country. DHS provides immigration relief such as Continued Presence (CP), T Visas, and U Visas to encourage victims to come forward and work with law enforcement. A Continued Presence Visa is for individual who have been a victim or have information regarding a potential case. It is issued for one year and can be re-issued if needed. To qualify for a T Visa you must be present in the U.S. due to human trafficking where U Visas can be acquired by people if they have visited the United States such as on vacation and the been subjected to human trafficking or another crime.
