We all know that the main functions of the blood are the transport of respiratory gases, digested food or nutrients, waste products, hormones, enzymes and ions from one body part to another, it protects a body against diseases and regulates body temperature. In other words, blood is the essence of life. A body cannot survive without a sufficient amount of blood. Unfortunately, there are people who don’t have the same chances as we do. Let us take the United States as example. Every two seconds, there is one person in the United states who are in need of blood. Every single day, approximately thirty-six thousand units of blood, nearly seven thousand units of platelets and ten thousand units of plasma are needed in the United …show more content…
Blood donation is a safe process as sterile needles are used only once on a patient and is then discarded afterwards. Therefore people should not worry about getting AIDS. It is also a simple three-step process consisting of screening(where the donor is asked to complete and show his or her ID card, then the donor is asked some health story questions then temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin are checked to ensure donor’s blood is safe to use.), donating (where the donor is asked to sit on a chair. His or her blood is cleaned with alcohol and a needle is inserted into a vein in his or her arm. The needle is removed after fifteen minutes when nearly a pint of blood of blood has been collected.) and refreshment (where the donor spends a few minutes enjoying refreshments to replace the fluids that he or she lost during donation. He or she can then leave the donation center and go back to his or her normal daily activities). Donating blood typically takes ten to fifteen minutes but the entire process from from the time the donor arrives till the time he or she leaves the center can take about one hour fifteen minutes.
