In the article entitled “Map It Then Write It!” by Kimberly Lott and Sylvia Read, I learned a lot about how beneficial mapping can be before a student begins to write about a certain topic. “Primary students have many options for graphic organizers to help develop writing skills in science” (Lott and Read, 46). This quote from the article really seems to sum up what the article was about because children have so many opportunities to use mapping to make their writing better, especially since there are so many different types of mapping. The purpose of this article is to inform teachers how to implement mapping in the classroom for students to learn how to organize and improve their writing skills.

Bubble maps can be used for students to brainstorm ideas about a certain topic, such as writing a topic in the center and thinking of words to explain it. Also, students could write down different scientific properties in their bubble map as they do their observations. This type of map relates to writing standards two and five from the Common Core standards because they both say that students should be able to develop and plan their writing, as well as write their texts effectively and organized, which the bubble map helps to achieve. This was my favorite type of mapping that was shown because I think that it is the easiest for children to use and keep their ideas organized. The second type of mapping is a flow map, which helps with sequencing and ordering (Lott and Read, 49). This …show more content…
It is important to join a professional community such as the NSTA because it allows teachers to stay updated and to always learn more about how to make their classroom better. I think that these are both great benefits of joining the NSTA. First, it is great to have all of these articles and resources available in just the click of a button. Secondly, it is very beneficial for us as teachers to constantly be learning new information to implement into our classroom. By having these journals available to use, we are able to learn about new ideas every month. It also is helpful that these are all written and updated currently and we are not reading out of date articles. It is important for us as future teachers to learn how to do things like this now, so that we can carry these ideas into our

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

Mary Beth Stevens suggests writing supports reading by asking students to draw upon common knowledge and thinking processes (2014). In the Texas Treasures Literature curriculum students continually respond to text through writing activities. At the end of each section they record their responses by writing a personal response. These responses require critical and higher order thinking skills because students answer open-ended questions and utilize summarization, inference and interpreting meaning skills. This allows students to explore their own thoughts and make connections to the text.…

Throughout the time that I have spent within my field placement, the teacher has allotted various small increments of time for vocabulary. The teacher usually spends less than five minutes discussing vocabulary that the students will see in a new book or when there is a question about a new vocabulary word. If the teacher is introducing multiple new words, she will spend between ten to fifteen minutes introducing the words, explaining the definitions of the words (and explaining which definition fits the best for the circumstance), and allowing students to make connections with the words. Once the teacher introduces the new words, she puts the new words on the word wall. This allows the students to reference the word wall throughout the day.…

Beth Antunez, author of English Language Learners and the Five Essential Components of Reading Instruction, says using these 5 components teachers can really reach their students who struggle with English reading development. The first component of the 5 is phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate phonemes in spoken words says author Beth Antunez. One activity that I can incorporate in my classroom to teach phonemic awareness is by using word family charts.…
