Textbooks or Tablets? Tablets can be very dangerous devices and should not be use in schools. They have many hidden issues that people are unaware of and they can have harmful-lasting effects on children and adults if used for long periods of time. Tablets should not be used in K-12 schools because they have many technical issues and can cause sleep disorders that can lead to long-term effects and many health issues. They have many problems that must be corrected before they will be safe for students to use them and in order to prevent school systems from making costly mistakes. When it comes to education, budgets are always a major concern. A survey recently taken by the digital book world website stated, “57% of the teacher responders selected ‘No budget to purchase applications/e-books’.” That means if a school even bought a tablet, how would they but applications on a tablet for learning? They would just have a plain tablet. There are some applications that are free, but out of 5,400 educational apps, only 1,000 are free. Costs are also a major issue when it comes to damage or disappearance. Theft is a major issue in schools and surrounding areas. If a student accidentally forgets his tablet or lays it down just for one second, somebody is going to take it. Having to replace a tablet every time it gets stolen could be costly. Children are often not gentle with things. They could throw the backpack down and the tablet’s screen could crack that easily. Tablets are very fragile and children are not gentle. The schools could buy cases, but that would add up to a tremendous amount of money and not all cases protect every weather condition. Some children would not even leave the case on the tablet because they would think it is too bulky. When a person drops a tablet, it does not just shatter the screen. It could damage the LCD meaning the part a person touches would no longer work. Those can be very costly and it is often cheaper just to replace the …show more content…
According to The Washington Post article written by Jill Adams, “People who spend two or more hours on a computer everyday are at risk for developing screen-induced eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome.” Some symptoms associated with computer vision syndrome are eye fatigue, burning and itchy eyes, blurred vision, and sensitivity to bright light. A study conducted by the University of New York College of Optometry found that when people read on screens, they tend to stare more than blink. This means a person’s eyes dry out. When a person looks at a tablet, he/she looks straight ahead. When a person looks at a book, he/she is staring straight down. When a person stares straight down or kind of at an angle, the person’s eyes are covered more by the eyelid, but when a person looks straight ahead; her/his entire eye is exposed to air. According to the Everyday Health magazine, “Staring at a screen over a long period of time can cause a person to become nearsighted.” So, if staring at screen more than two hours a day puts a person at risk for computer vision syndrome, what can it do to a child who stares at a Tablet for eight or more hours a day? Computer vision syndrome could nearly blind a person. This is the main reason tablets should not be used in schools. Textbooks are harmless.
