Case Study: The Monarch Butterfly

Superior Essays
The monarch butterfly, also known as Danaus plexippus, is recognized as America’s state insect with a wing span of 4 inches and 10 centimeters long – the longest wing span ever recorded within the monarchs’ insect population (Conant, 2012). Monarchs are notorious in the United States because of their spectacular migration across Canada and the United States to the overwintering sites in central Mexico – and back again. In this case, monarchs migrate between 2,000 to 3,000 miles every single year (Urquhart, F.A. and Urquhart, N.R., 1976). A monarchs ' 3,000 mile trip is like a person traveling 275, 000 miles (Opler, 2010) – that’s like walking around Earth eleven times. The main reason why Monarchs migrate from eastern North America to the forests of Oyamel in Michoacán, Mexico, is due to season change, in pursuit for food and water, or in search for a new mate (Conant, 2012). Monarch butterflies fly south to Mexico because it gets colder in the north. The monarchs migrate to approximately 10 to 13 colony sites in the Oyamel forests of central Mexico. The first site of these migrating butterflies was in 1975 when a forest trooper in Mexico stumbled upon the vast number of monarch butterflies resting onto the trees …show more content…
A good way to help monarchs during their eastern or western migration is to commit to an organic dietary lifestyle: create a native insect-friendly garden, eat foods that are not genetically modified and avoid commercially known foods. Taking action in the community is vastly important in raising awareness about the genetically modified farms that are harming the larval developmental growth and maturation stages of these monarch butterflies. Without the monarch butterfly in our ecosystem some flowering plants may disappear from Earth

In the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, the protagonist, Minerva Mirabal, plays one of the most important roles by starting a revolution and believing that she could change the ideal image of a woman in the Dominican Republic. In the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses point of view. This allows each character to have their own personality through the way they are depicted through the writing, making them more relatable to the reader. All of Dede’s chapters are written in the third person spoken from Julia Alvarez's point of view such as in chapter nine when she states, “Dede worries this woman will never find her way back to the main road in the dark”(Alvarez 172). Minerva’s chapters are written in first person, in the opening sentence of chapter six she says,” I know the rumor that got started since I’d been living at home a few years” (Alvarez 84). The way that their chapters are constructed allow the readers to feel more of a connection…

I chose to investigate the environmental impact of gypsy moths because I have personally had experience cleaning up after these pests in northern Ohio and I know that they are becoming an issue in other parts of Ohio as well. I was able to witness some of the damage they have done while removing defoliated trees in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Gypsy moths are a non-native, invasive species that, over the past decade, have been coming into the state from Pennsylvania and Michigan. The moth undergoes a complete metamorphosis and while a caterpillar it has the ability to feed on over three hundred species of trees and shrubs and cause serious damage and defoliation. The moth’s preference for oak, make the oak tree particularly at risk because the caterpillars favor it and a tree can typically only withstand two years of defoliation before the damage is permanent or results in the death of the tree.…

In The Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses allusions to the poems of Jose Marti to express the sisters Minerva and Maria Teresa's priorities around the revolution. Maria Teresa has started to feel longing and sad because she does not have strong relationships and she wishes to get answers for everything. She’s also stating that if she were to love someone then she wouldn’t need answers anymore. She uses this poem by Jose Marti to express her feelings saying, “And so it is of human life the goal / to seek, forever seek, the kindred soul.” (Alvarez 122)…

One of the most fascinating creatures to me as a child was the monarch butterfly. Not only for its eye-catching wings that match the autumn leaves, but how they are the only butterfly that migrates south for the winter, similar to birds. Every year, millions make their journey from North America to Mexico or California, although those individual butterflies won’t return. Monarch migration is one of mother nature’s greatest phenomena. They migrate for two reasons: they cannot withstand the harsh, cold weather, and the larval food plants don’t grow in their winter habitats, so the spring generation migrates back north where plants grow.…

Food hunger is a big problem in today 's world because of our tremendously high population, but the lack of food production is not the only problem that causes these things; other factors such as food waste, poverty and many other factors are causing huge impact to the world (Global food crisis). Another positive claim that comes from these genetically modified crops is that they can sustain pesticides better than non gmo crops, and therefore less pesticide has to be used; but these crops have actually caused more pesticides to be used in crops after they began to be modified, and that is because insects are always adapting to the new substances and plants that are…
