Cronus had learned that one of his children was fated to dethrone him, so he swallowed all of his children as soon as they were born in order to keep it from happening. However, Cronus 's wife Rhea saved Zeus by switching him with a stone that Cronus then ate, and hid Zeus in a cave on Crete. Once Zeus grew to manhood he led a revolt against the Titans and succeeded in dethroning his father, possibly with the help of his brothers. Then he drew lots with his brothers Poseidon (god of the sea), and Hades (god of the underworld) to decide who would take their father 's place as ruler, and, as it turns out, Zeus was the winner, and this is how he gained the title King of the Gods and Ruler of the Olympians (Encyclopedia of Britannica). With his title as King of the Gods, being the lord of the sky and rain, and wielding a thunderbolt as a weapon, which he hurled at his enemies and those who defied him, he was to be feared as a very powerful god. Zeus was said to live on the summit of Mt. Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, and the logical home for a weather god. From his home atop Mt. Olympus, Zeus would watch over, protect, punish, and dispense justice to those below him (Encyclopedia of Britannica). These affairs started long before he married Hera, but his marriage did almost nothing to end the affairs. Many of these affairs came from when he would become one with a town 's original divinity, because, when they would combine the wife of the first then became Zeus 's (Mythology Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, 20-21). Through his many affairs came the children Aeacus, Hercules, Arcus, Perseus, Dardanus, Minos, Sarpedon, Rhadamanthys, Hermes, Dionysus, Lacedaemon, and many more (greekmythology.com). These affairs almost always ended badly for the women and children involved in them. The women were almost always punished and the children were many times put through trials. This was because Hera was very good at finding out who Zeus was spending his free time with and making a habit of punishing those he fooled around with (greekmythology.com). As King of the Gods, Zeus has shown to be a very powerful and intelligible god, even though Fate had far greater power than he could even dream. He did have a few issues though: these were mainly all the affairs that he kept getting caught having or how he could be tricked and deceived. For the most part he did a very good job, and just about everyone loved him, considering how he was a fair and loving god (even though he required sacrifices of men and right actions from time to time) that watched over everyone below him dispensing justice as needed, rewarding the good and
