The family unit is an important part of the society which has greatly undergone drastic

changes. Many pointers like the media have shown how various changes of the family have

taken place throughout the decades. The media especially television has given valuable input on

how a family was viewed at a certain point in time (Anderson & Taylor 400). Many television

shows have been produced that point out the various changes happening in the society. The

definition of the family institution as consisting of the father and mother has greatly been

challenged (Leigh 162).

The family basically was made up of the father, mother and children though some

included grandparents, uncles and aunties which made up extended families. The media

The children did not only

belong to the parents buy they belonged to the community as a whole. The community was an

important part of society that safeguarded cultural values and norms and ensured that each and

every person was regarded and honored (Pablo 94). From the television shows arising in that

period show a clear and distinct role of parents and their children.

Decades ago the society greatly esteemed the family. A problem was communally solved

and was not left to the individual to bare it alone. The traditional society did not stand some

types of behavior as evidenced in the present. People did not embrace vices such as crime in the

community. Moral values were greatly upheld in traditional society and the people valued them

highly. Girls were to wait until they married so as to come out of their homes while boys were

supposed to follow suit. Most of the television shows taught on moral lessons and they therefore

acted as an education point to most of the community in contrast the present day society which

opts to support immoral values by support groups who sometimes call themselves liberal.

The difference can be seen in the laws that have come

up concerning the family. The government has held various views in relation to the parties in the

government like in the USA there are the democrats and the republicans who support different

views. The democrats support gay and abortion rights while the republicans are more

conservative. The various ideologies developed therefore affect the people who are being rules

and some are forced to accept the rule be it that of democrats or republicans if they are chosen by

the majority. The family unit was of father and mother but abortion has gone up because the

children don’t want to wait until they get married and therefore end up having unwanted

pregnancies. The television shows at the present have a lot of immorality and most of the shows

are watched by teenagers. A majority of the parents go to work for long hours and live their

children in the care of the nanny. The nanny may live them to the mercy of the television and as

they watch their minds are changed dramatically over a long time. The children are exposed

But around the world some people have a family that is different from other's based on the way their culture has taught them to be. A better way to understand the meaning of family is to apply the three major sociological theories. The first theory is the Functionalist by Emile Durkheim which explains that society has to follow certain functions and how the basic needs are helpful to live in any kind of society there is in this world.
