Three Words To Describe Myself Essay

Mark Twain once said, “The worst loneliness is to not be comfortable with yourself.” As a person who struggles with depression and low self-esteem, I find this quote to be very easy to relate to. With this mindset, it can be difficult to have a positive outlook not only on life, but on myself. This essay gives me a chance to explore the parts of myself that I am proud of and examine the people and events that have shaped me. Three words I would use to describe myself are logical, open-minded, and responsible. Everyone is logical to some degree, but I consider it to be part of my identity because I find that I make most decisions using my mind rather than my emotions. I most likely developed this way of thinking from my dad. Growing up, I …show more content…
For example, I got a check for $1,000 for my birthday and although I wanted to spend all of it, I decided to put some into my savings account because it would be better for me in the future. I think the fact that I use reason rather than impulse judgements as a base for forming opinions and making decisions makes “logical” a very important part of my self-concept.
Being open-minded is something I think I learned from my parents. My parents brought me to church with them every Sunday when I was little, but as I got older they made it an option rather than an obligation. They always encouraged me to go to church with my friends so I could see what different religions were like and they let me express my opinions on such matters without being …show more content…
My sophomore year I started school at the Alabama School of Math and Science, a school in Mobile that was four hours away from my home. I was in charge of remembering to do my homework and my laundry, and I had to learn how to do things without the help of my parents. Being away from home gave me a chance to grow as an individual and learn what it was like to live on my own. I had to learn how to manage my time, prioritize, and stay within a monthly budget. This experience has given me the skills necessary to becoming the self-sufficient individual that I am today. I consider “responsible” to be a major part of my self-concept because it has been a predominant characteristic during times of struggle in my life. Not long after my dad passed away last April, I had to start helping my mom pay bills because she was no longer receiving monthly child support checks. Even though it was a hard time in my life, I knew I had to get a job in order for us to be able to keep our house, pay the bills, and have enough

On a personal level outside of my academics I have always been a thinker. However throughout my academic journey I have learned to dig beyond the surface and ask “why?” when analyzing particular matters at hand. While watching the film Holy Smoke my thoughts were jumping from place to place; I found myself confused most of the time. When I would conclude one thought, I would then jump to a whole new conclusion; needless to say I was all over the place with my thoughts and will probably still be by the end of my time reflecting on this film.…
