Throughout the play, the audience questions Brutus’ actions and whether or not they are ethical at times. The first impression of Brutus is a man with an increasingly high rank in Rome. His loyalty is displayed when he talks of what Rome means to him. When he is convinced by the conspirators to kill Cesar the audience sees Brutus’ fatal flaw. His gullibility is shown and his nobility begins to flake away, “And since the case against Caesar/ Can 't be proved from what he is like now,/ We must shape our argument in this way: That Caesar 's true nature, if allowed to develop/ Would reach terrible extremes.” (2.1.29-31). After Cesar’s death, the audience sees Brutus’ head strong personality and seems to be a different character. When Brutus wants to battle against Anthony, a clearly stronger opponent, he displays faithlessness and the audience feels pity for Brutus.
