Happiness Such a powerful word in American culture Much of my life, I had thought of happiness as a rather nebulous term. I also had some impressions that because I was fortunate enough to have been born in a first world country, happiness was just part of the package. It is there to assist us in disengagements, a flight or fight response, or to attack. Positive emotions play the opposite role, helping us to “broaden our abiding intellectual, physical, and social resources, building up reserves we can draw upon when a threat or opportunity presents itself.” People with high positive affect do not feel good all the time but just more often than those who don’t. However, positive emotion can undo the negative emotions, based on the happiness formula. The equation is ‘H=S + C + V’.…

One of the three major roles a School Psychologist is responsible for is providing interventions for their students. These interventions take three forms: academic assessment, behavior intervention, and psychological assessment. Happiness is seen as something everyone should strive for in life, and America has turned happiness into an industry that its citizens are buying into. However, there are many scientists that have found that complete and total happiness is not the best thing for people. ” Negative”, emotions are equally important because they are a biological inheritance and they improve one’s analytical skills. Having “negative” emotions is just as important as having happiness.…

“The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Anchor is an article with a clear goal of the benefits of a positive outlook. The way the author Shawn Anchor outlines his points however, seem overtly simplified. In a sense this is directly due to the fact of a common trend among many individuals in similar standings such as the author. That is, the idea of improving general human life while at the same time standing upon of societal and economical pedestal. In many cases although the findings of research studies such as those presented within “ The Happiness Advantage” may very well be completely sound but, still remaining rather short sighted as “We know all men are not created equal in the sense some people would have us believe” – said Harper Lee, To…

Csikszentmihalyi insists that happiness does not simply happen, but rather, it must be created by each individual by setting goals that are neither too simple nor difficult to achieve. As Csikszentmihalyi stated, "Happiness is not something that happens. It is not the result of good fortune or random chance…But rather, on how we interpret them” (608).…

Almost all people, when asked, will confess that one of their biggest goals in life is to be happy, but when does that dream start to have a detrimental effect on people? Barry Schwartz proposed the theory, “happiness as a byproduct of living your life is a great thing...but happiness as a goal is a recipe for disaster.” While this quote can be interpreted in various ways, it sends a compelling message that happiness as the sole objective in a person’s life leaves room for failure, can become very destructive, and is very fragile. While attempting to achieve happiness at all times can be extremely harmful, achieving happiness as general contentment instead can be a much healthier and more positive alternative which will result in a greater sense of prolonged happiness.…

Introduction In recent years, the field of Psychology has deviated some of its focus from negative emotions to positive emotions. This was brought on by Martin Seligman (President of American Psychological Association in 1998) who suggested that the field move away from the traditional focus of remedying damage in people’s lives, and to instead place focus on building and understanding positive qualities and strengths within people (Reeve, 2015). This recent emergence of positive psychology has paved the way for new theoretical perspectives and therapeutic models, in particular meaning focused coping and the integrated meaning making model.…

I had a small notion of what positive psychology was before this semester. However, learning more about different research studies and their findings has helped me see positive psychology as its own force in the science of psychology. Course assignments have helped me understand, retain, and apply the positive psychology principles to my own behavior and perspective, as well.
