The internet is an incredible invention. It has changed the way we live, work and play. Never has media been more easily accessible. Most people would say that the internet has improved our lives immensely but, has anyone stopped to think about the negative aspects of the internet? The truth is that as wonderful as the internet is, the effect on our economy and job market have been negative. Just a few short years ago people would go to the movie theater to see movies on opening night. There was a rush to see a film as soon as it was released. It would be a year or more before the movie would come out on video and the theater was the only way to see it sooner. A big expense for a family was to have a set of encyclopedias in their home and even then they would be quickly outdated and a new set would be necessary. Most students today have never touched a hard copy encyclopedia. All of the information that could be obtained in those books, and more, are now delivered in seconds by simply requesting it on a computer. What happened to all of these businesses? What about the employees? Most of the mentioned businesses do not exist anymore. The surviving businesses, such as banks and USPS, have been forced to reduce their staffs accordingly. The loss of available jobs to fill has caused a drop in the employment rate which, by turn, has passed the losses on to the economy. Also effecting the job availability is many customer service jobs being sent overseas. Many company’s claim it is for cheaper labor and, this may be true, however, before the internet this option would not have been as affordable. If companies had to use the postal service mail to send memos overseas instead of emails then directives, contracts and instructions would have been too slow moving to be a good business choice. If the same companies had to send faxes, which were very expensive in the past, instead of scanning to email, the option of working with a customer service department in India would have been very
