This paper was commissioned by Ms Xiang Gao, a lecture at International Pacific College (IPC). Its purpose is to examine and analyse the conflict between Palestine and Israel in Middle East.
The conflict between Israel and Palestine can be considered the most intractable conflict in the world. This conflict has been started since the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. Israel is the country, which is the only Jewish state in the world. It locates in the East of the Mediterranean Sea in Asia. Palestine is a state in the Middle East, which was declared independence in 1988. It locates in West Bank and Gaza Trip in the Western Asia. The conflict can be known as a modern phenomenon (Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 2014). After the end of World War I, the land that Jews and Arabs claimed was known as Palestine. Then, following the war in 1949, this land was separated into three areas: the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the State of Israel (World Report, 2013). There are many reasons that caused the Israel - Palestine conflict such as water and land rights, border security and legalities concerning refugees. However, the most important reasons are the different religions and the control of Jerusalem (What are Israel and Palestine, n.d). Palestinians who refer to the Arabs, Christians and Muslims became refugees between 1947 and 1949 because of the consequence of the fighting in Palestine and Israel (What are Israel and Palestine, n.d). The population of Palestinians is divided in many locations in Middle East. In particular, over 5 million Palestinians now live in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the State of Israel, where were occupied and captured by Israel in 1967 (Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 2014). Over 1.2 million Palestinians, which can be comprised about 20 per cent of Israel’s population, are living inside the State of Israel. There are also over 1.4 million people live in the Gaza Strip and over 2.2 million people live in the West Bank (Primer on Palestine, n.d). Besides that, Jerusalem is also one of the most important reasons that caused the Israel - Palestine conflict. Jerusalem is the Israel’s capital, which is also known as the ‘’Holy Land’’ (Israeli-Palestinian conflict, 2014). The location of Jerusalem is between the State of Israel and the West Bank It can be considered as home of the holiest sites in Christian, Judaism, Islamic and Jewish (Israel-Palestinian conflict, 2014).
