The long jump was part of the first Olympics in ancient Greece and also was featured in the first modern games in 1896.although the long jump has changed substantially over the past few thousand years, it stills is included in track and field events on the local, regional, and national and international levels (www.britaninca.com). The standard venue for the long jump included a runway at least 40 meters (131feet) in length with no outer limits, a takeoff board planted level with the surface at least 1 meter (3.3 feet) from the end of the runway, and a sand filled landing area at least 2.75meters (9feet) and no more than 3 meters (9.8 feet) wide (www.britannica.com). The long jump was formerly performed from both standing and running starts, as separate events, but the standing jump is no longer included in major competitions. (Britannica.com). The long jump was part of the pentathlon event in the Olympics in ancient Greece, circa 708 b.c. (live strong .com). The athletes competitors used jump weights called halters that were made from stone or lead and shaped like telephones receivers, long jumpers held the halter in front of themselves as they jumped in to the air, then threw it behind them as they descended. (Livestrong.com). The most used technique in the long jump is the tuck in which the knees are brought up towards the chest, and the hitch kick, which is in effect a continuation of the run in the air (www.britannica.com). The legs are brought together for landing, and since the length of the jump is measured from the edge of the takeoff board to the nearest mark in the landing area surface made by any part of the body, the jumper attempts to fall forward (www.britannica.com). Track and field shows us how it originated and how much people are passionate for the sport and determination to get better at it. Track and field will give them the opportunity to show how good they are at what they do.
