Noise can cause permanent hearing loss at chronic exposure levels of at least 85 dB or higher for an eight hour period (Peter M. Rabinowitz, Pg.1). The louder the sound, the shorter the time period before NIHL can occur. Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss (Hearing Health Foundation 2015).
Hearing loss that is caused by the noise exposure due to recreational or non-occupational activities is termed socioacusis. Hearing loss due to injurious noise at workplace is referred to as occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) (Mathur, Neeraj N. Roland, Peter S 2014). Some recreational activities that can put you at risk include target shooting, listening to music at high volume through headphones, playing in a band, and attending loud concerts (NIDCD 2014).
