The poem I chose, “Happiness” by Jane Kenyon, describes what happiness truly is. It tells a story of who it comes to, and how happiness comes to everyone no matter what the situation is. The poem says in the beginning 2 paragraphs how happiness is always there and that it “saved its most extreme form for you alone”. I believe what the Kenyon is trying to say at that moment is that you have the power to be happy, even when you are alone. The poem also has very specific examples of who happiness comes to.…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

    • 5 Pages

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

Summary: The story I have chosen to write about is “Creating Your Own Happiness” by Wayne Coyne. The topic of the story is that no matter how bad you think you have it, with the right mental attitude, you can overcome it and find happiness. It starts out with Wayne driving down the street and stopping at the stop light, listening to his radio. It’s a cold, windy day, and he looks outside to see two people sitting on a bench, huddling together, trying to find warmth.…

The World’s Wife is a collection of poetry that successfully challenges society’s preconceptions of what it means to be a woman. While the female voice is often silenced, Duffy focuses on the women who were in the midst of male-centric stories in Biblical, mythological and fairytale narratives. Some may argue that the expectations of women are completely subverted in poems such as The Devil’s Wife, in which the maternal and nurturing image of a woman is replaced by the disturbing portrayal of the infamous child serial killer Myra Hindley. Alternatively, some feminine qualities are also explored in this poem, such as a woman’s dependence on men, as demonstrated by Hindley’s twisted, passionate love for Ian Brady.…

In life, no one deserves to suffer from any form of misery and unpleasantness. However, there are times in which people should face suffering. In the poem At Dusk, by Natasha Trethewey, the speaker witnesses a neighbor dealing with one of those times in which pain should be endured and empathizes with her. Using the speaker’s experience and thoughts, Trethewey communicates that people should cope with undesirable feelings if it is for the sake of allowing a loved one to be happy, as well as convey the possibility of the neighbor having gone through an experience similar to that of his or her neighbor. In the beginning, the speaker portrays the situation he or she sees regarding his or her neighbor; the speaker explains that the neighbor is calling for her cat to return home.…

    The Scream Poem Analysis

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
