They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution. (Kendall 434) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses. (Kendall 434) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the States. (Kendall 434) In this day and age people feel that this definition should be broadened to include what establishes a family. In our reading assignment the current definition of families is a follows: families as relationships in which people live together with commitment, form an economic unit and care for any young, and consider their identity to be significantly attached to the group. (Kendall 434) This is a more appropriate definition in my opinion because families are much different in this day and age. Gay and lesbian families are more widely accepted and in some cases allowed to adopt, or they bear their own children. However in many parts of the U.S. gay or lesbian marriage is not recognized as legally binding. So even though a gay or lesbian couple can have children and live together as a couple it would not fit the 1948 definition of family. Furthermore, the living arrangements in families have changed to include multiple generations, single parent households, and unmarried couples, all of these scenarios do not fit the 1948 definition of family. However, most people in our society would consider this situation to still be a family. Also another change to families since the 1948 definition is that more and more women contribute to the family’s income now. Most families have a dual income whereas in 1948 the man was the bread

I feel that all people should have a say or choice in who they want to marry or if they want to get married at all. I don’t see any problems with the change in living situations now versus the past. I don’t see why it should matter if people are married before having children, or if a relationship doesn’t work out why it would be frowned upon to move in with someone else that helps to raise the child. Same sex marriage and partnership is more widely accepted even to point of legalizing marriage in some states. I feel that families are becoming more diverse because people are becoming more accepting and open minded. We have more ethnicities and cultures being blended in this country than any other so it only makes sense that families would become more diverse as the cultures
