Cultural Generativity In Punjabi Culture

Generativity can be expressed in so many ways. There are four areas in which generativity is expressed: biological, parental, work, and cultural. Biological generativity is when a child is conceived and will give back to the society and the community. Thus, they will be helping future generations. Parental generativity is when parents provide the care and the support the child needs. They are taught how to behave and what their role is in society. Work generativity is when individuals guide and mentor younger individuals. These younger individuals learn how to develop the skills and knowledge required for the job. Gurmukhi is basically an alphabet that one uses to write in the Punjabi language. I am a Sikh and we speak Punjabi. We are also taught English here. It becomes hard for parents to teach you the language and customs of their culture when the school is teaching you a different culture from one’s own. My parents have expressed generativity by teaching my brothers and me how to speak and write in Punjabi. I still have difficulty but I will always be learning. My dad also has story time when we were kids and would teach us the history of India. He would tell us amazing stories of wars and how everything came to be. I try to remember all these stories so that I can tell them to my kids one day. My dad also takes us to church every Sunday so that we can learn more about our heritage. He also bought me books on the history of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, an Indian God. This book has helped me learn the life of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. I read it on my spare time. My father and mother make sure we know all about our cultural holidays and why we celebrate them. For example, we celebrate Diwali, Rakhi, Independence Day, Holi and many more. I want to make sure my kids know all about their heritage and where they came from by making a book with the history of my culture. I want to write down all the stories that my dad told me so that they won’t forget. I also want to write down my dad’s and my mom’s past and where they came from. I want to write how they got here. I want to include pictures of my parents too. I want them to remember their grandpa and their grandma and respect them as much as I do for their hard work. I want to make sure that my kids know that their culture is important. They need to remember it for future generations. I would like my future grandchildren to learn about Punjabi and how to write it. I also want them to celebrate Indian holidays. My mom would always light up diyas on Sunday nights. Diya is a dough that is shaped like a little pan. It is filled up with vegetable oil and a small piece of a cotton ball is added. The piece of cotton ball is lit on fire. This brightens the whole room. The reason why my mom does this is to represent that the good has taken over the evil. I would like for my kids to keep that family tradition. I want them to go to church and know who our Gods are. I want to write letters to my kids and give advice to them on how to live a good life.
