Communication is the act of interacting, sharing, or exchanging information, ideas, feelings, or emotions. Interpersonal communication always involves two people, from one person to the other, usually face-to-face. There has to be a personal connection or similarity in varying roles or relationships to on another. Without communication, relationships wouldn’t exist. Communication is essential in developing relationships with people all around us and all over the world. There are too many aspects of interpersonal communication to list them all. A couple of aspects are how we express our feelings and emotions, and our ability to listen actively. I will be discussing these two important aspects of interpersonal communication in this paper. …show more content…
Emotions can be perceived as positive or negative depending on a person’s personal situation. (Ben-Ze’ev, 2000) Some emotions are joy, anger, grief, etc. Emotions can also be expressed nonverbally. It is important to be able to detect emotions through verbal and nonverbal cues. Some people experience an emotion and can express it to a friend or family member or suppress their emotions and keep to themselves. Even if you suppress your emotions, they can be expressed through nonverbal communication, such as facial expression and body …show more content…
(Dobrescu & Petrovici, 2014) The domain of self-awareness is the understanding of personal emotions. Empathy is being able to identify and understand the emotions of others. Emotion management is the ability to manage your own emotions to either calm yourself down or eliminate negative emotions. Self-motivation is the emotional self-control and act like you do every day. Positive interactions with others can establish into interpersonal relationships. These five domains are some key abilities in active listening.
When we express our emotions verbally to someone, like a friend or family member, the other party should actively listen. Listening is not the same as hearing because you need to be able to interpret and comprehend the words someone is saying. Having good hearing doesn’t necessarily mean they have good listening. The message cannot be received effectively if the receiver does not have the ability to listen. Good listeners don’t just hear the words, they interpret the meaning of them. (Kline,
