New situations always make me a bit nervous and learning to ride a bike was no exception. I remember this moment like it was yesterday. It was my fifth birthday and my parents got me a bright red bike that looked like a Ferrari. I was so excited, this was my first …show more content…
My Dad told me after lunch he would teach me how to ride it. I was ecstatic, right after I finished my grilled cheese with bacon and my cold glass of milk I jumped out of my seat and ran to the closet where I kept my equipment. I put my kneepads, elbow pads, shoes and my helmet on and walked outside. It was a warm sunny day, not a single cloud in the sky, I knew today was the perfect day to learn how to ride my brand new bike. Before I closed the door my mom yelled “ don’t hurt yourself”. And then it hit me, I stood timidly on my front deck while my dad went to retrieve my bike from the garage. I remember feeling sick to my stomach about the thought of falling off my bike and hurting myself. Something I wasn’t thinking about earlier that day while eating my grilled cheese. My dad got my bike from the garage and I knew it was time, I didn’t realize until I grabbed the handle bars that I was sweating like a pig. My dad spent hours teaching me how to ride, he held onto the back of the seat the whole time while I got a feel for it. By the time dinner came I got the hang of it, I could pedal and steer with my dad holding onto the seat. The next step was him letting go. After supper my dad took me to an open road with no cars. I got onto the bike and started to pedal. “Am I getting the hang of it?” I asked. He did not answer, I didn’t think anything of it until I looked back to see my dad. Except he wasn’t where I expected him to be he was sixty yards away from where I was. Suddenly I got very frightened, this was my first time biking without someone holding onto the back of the seat making sure I wouldn’t fall. I then realized that I was doing it, I was riding my bike all by myself. “ Im doing it” I exclaimed, I looked back at my dad and saw the biggest smile on his face. I knew I had made him proud. It was at that moment that I had overcome my fear of falling off my bike and learned how to ride it without my training wheels. A few days ago I went on a bike ride with my dad and it had brought all the memories back. When I look back at my childhood one of the most memorable experiences would be learning to ride a bike. Learning to ride a bike was an important part of my life and I will never forget it, it taught me how will-power and perseverance help overcome challenges throughout life. And to this day I think back to what I
