Myself Before the Marine Corps, and Myself After
(Item to Item)

Before I had joined the Marine Corps I was much different than I am now. During high school it was as if I was sleep walking through my entire life. I had no ambitions, and I had now worries. A worry free life might be what some people are looking for, but I found that I lacked responsibility and discipline. During school I would either sleep or simply ignore the instructor, my attention to detail was completely nonexistent. I sat by and watched as all of my friends started on the road to self-actualization and became young adults. In truth, during this phase of my life I thought I was already the man I wanted to be, only after the Marine Corps did I find out that this man was

Not only am I more humble I am also more open minded about cultures and peoples. I see everyone as equal and not for the place they come from or the way they look. Before the Marine Corps I lived a sheltered life. I was taught to believe what my parents believed and that was that. This became a difficult obstacle to get over when joining the Marine Corps. I was introduced to a melting pot of sorts where people from all different walks of life lived together and depended on each other. I quickly began to realize that all these people were my friends and that judging a book by its cover is a very ineffective way of judging a person. When I was in high school I felt as though I was a god, I could take on anything and anyone, after joining the Corps I definitely know I am NOT a god, and I do have extreme limitations. What would life be without a ton of obstacles in the way? From birth to now I have felt change inside myself many times, I have changed my likes and dislikes, my personality, and my goals. But one thing is for sure, joining the Marine Corps was the biggest life changer of all. In a span of three months I was completely changed for the better and I have no regrets about joining the Corps. Although it may have not turned out the way I had wanted it to, I am a better person for join the United States Marine Corps, and I owe it for everything I may accomplish in the

My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. The next thing to go was my hearing, followed by my ability to walk in a straight line. My platoon sergeant saw the signs of heat stroke and forced me to stop. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…

At the time of joining the service I realized I wanted to be capable of doing so much more but had little or no direction as to what I wanted to do exactly. After completion of my first two years in the service I hated it until I crossed paths with a great leader while deployed in Afghanistan.…

I enlisted into the Marine Corps at the age of 17 and turned 18 the day I arrived to boot camp. I quickly had to learn what it meant to be responsible for those around me to include their welfare, their lives, and their families. I also developed strong leadership and management skills to accompany those skills in which are needed to be a successful Career Marine. I was a part of that group and during my marine corps career I strived hard to better myself, which to me is what being a Marine is all about. When I graduated MOS school and made it to my first duty station I did not waste anytime trying to prove that.
