Collins, in “Black Sexual Politics: African Americans, Gender and The New Racism”, gives an in-depth analysis to the constructions of Black masculinity and femininity across socioeconomic levels and within particular notable roles (eg. the athlete, the parent). While she does pay close attention to the commodification of the sexualized Black female body by Black men, and what is referred to as “black-on-black violence” especially in her chapters “Booty Call” and “Get Your Freak On”, what she does not examine is how these two ideas intersect. More specifically, Collins fails to address is the role of domestic violence and homicide within this power struggle. Professor Angello’s lectures and Tyson’s chapter on Marxism were very consumable. They helped me recognize and correct a lot of misinformation that I had been fed about Marxism, and it’s not hard to see why so much misinformation about Marxist theory would be present in the popular culture of a capitalist society. I really like that Marxist theory recognizes the way a literary body is both influenced by the culture it is produced in and influences the culture it is produced into. I never liked that New Criticism so sharply separates literature, or any artform, from the culture surrounding it, but I couldn’t get on board with the way some forms of biographical and historical criticism overlook the text in favor of the culture it was created…

For some people high school can be viewed as a time of growth and excitement, for others, it is viewed as a daunting task that with any luck will not bring emotional defeat. The Perks of Being a Wallflower demonstrates just how hard it is to remain true to who you are, or whom you think you may be, especially in times of adversity. Adolescents in the world today face many of the same obstacles portrayed in this film. Misogynistic lines such as, ‘Slut, you think I wont choke no whore til the vocal chords don’t work in her throat no more?’, conveys that a women’s voice has no significance in society and should be silenced with force. These lyrics employ misogyny to legitimize domestic violence and highlight that women should be compliant and domesticated by men. Women feel disempowered by the song as it creates an ‘ideology that reduces women to objects for men’s ownership, use or abuse.’ (Cundiff, 2013). Overall the song interprets the negative notion of a man’s suppressive and hostile actions towards a…
