Thousands of indigenous children were removed from their homes and placed in Residential schools. They were told by complete strangers that their identity (who they were) was wrong and shameful. These schools were notorious for the abuse of children, both physically and mentally. The Europeans tried to destroy their spirits, and they did. Indigenous people showed resistance against the European social norms when they fought against the pursuit of missionaries, educators, and government officials (King 2011). They didn’t want to be controlled by those who didn’t understand their culture and traditions. Indigenous people are now, “determined to be seen as Indians” (King 2011). This is a form of resistance. They are refusing to accept the injustice placed upon them, and want to fight for their identity and who they culturally identify
