The World Does Not Define Me; I Am My Own Identity
To begin this competition, Morning. Not “Good Morning”. If you’ve seen Undercover Brother, you may comprehend what I’m saying, but for those who haven’t seen it, instead of explaining it using expletives and getting DQ'd, here’s the whole scene long story short; if you say Good Morning, you’re wanting to kill me first thing in the morning. The movie itself is filled with stereotypes that are designed to define people of color to ultimately make people laugh. Some people may unfortunately believe these stereotypes and might ask me if I hate mayo or miracle whip and love hot sauce on my fried bologna sandwiches. However, that’s where the buck stops with me; for The World Does Not Define Me; I Am My Own Identity.
As of today, this will be my last oratorical competition as a result of my time in Jack and Jill coming to an end. I’m a senior about to graduate on May 25th (If you want an invite, don’t hesitate to ask),

I was coached by one of the greatest yet also famous coaches who coached Kenny Mundy, Thomas Landrum (my cousin), and my father. His name is Coach Ernie Jones. Whenever someone wanted to start on Varsity but someone else was already starting at that weight, they needed to be within 4 pounds of the original weight class and needed to beat the starter twice. This year, one gallant Freshman had decided to battle it out at 145 against one of my close classmates and teammates from my former football team. Everyone in the room expected the upperclassman to represent and put an underclassman in his place. That upperclassman left to play soccer two weeks later. That Freshman’s name is Jared Douglass and he did not let the broad fact that he was a freshman define him to lose to the Junior Broc Kelly. Just like Erik, Jared completed the exact same feat. They did not allow their worlds to define them. And just like them, I have my own identity to define

The award-winning journalist and memoirist as well as the author of The Beautiful Struggle has written an amazing memoir that will reach out and touch the readers’ hearts; however at times this memoir does make readers get a little uncomfortable. Between the World and Me is a memoir that Coates writes in the form of a letter to his fifteen year old son, Samori. This book is told in three different parts and is about Ta-Nehisi Coates’s experience about growing up in Baltimore during the 1980s and what he witnessed during this time such as fear, racism, and the demoralization of the “black body.” Because of this memoir, Coates has successfully informed many “dreamers”, or people living in ignorance about what happened to Ta-Nehisi Coates…

The life lessons learned in football will follow me for the rest of my life. My coach in 9th grade, Coach Hayes, was the first coach that I had that expected greatness out of me. He singled me out from the rest of the receivers at the Woodlands High School by picking on me and also encouraging me. I figured out why he was doing this; he saw something in me that told him that I could someday be a great player, but even more than that I could be that best that I could be. My favorite Coach I’ve ever had is actually my current coach, Coach Larry Harvey.…

As William Shakespeare says, “We know what we are, but not what we may be” (BrainyQuote). Often times in society, people allow material possessions inhibit their ability to become what they are capable of being; accepting who they are currently. Derek Parfit summed up this idea by saying “Whatever happens between now and any future time, either I shall still exist, or I shall not. Any future experience will either be my experience, or it will not.” (Parfit- 186), which is what personal identity looks into.
