Register to read the introduction… We are exposed to number of chemicals of both natural and man-made origin. Exposure occurs through absorption, inhalation, or by ingestion. These chemicals can be in aerosol, liquid, solid, or vaporous forms. You may notice immediate, acute effect from chemical exposure, along with chronic effects, a result of from long-term exposure. Low-level exposure to certain chemicals may result in damage to the nervous and immune systems, impairment of reproductive function and development, cancer, and organ damage (Kinn’s, 2007). Some pollutants are airborne substances, primarily suspended particulates, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, and carbon monoxide, emitted as byproducts of energy production, industry, and transportation. Exposure to pesticides can occur directly, typically to agricultural workers and their families. Exposures can also be indirect, pesticides contaminating water or soil, or when pesticide residues on food or contaminated fish or wildlife which are ingested. We can find chemicals we use every day in our kitchens, medicine cabinets, basements, and garages. Chemicals are in our food as preservatives to keep it fresh, and in our shampoos and soaps for personal hygiene. We use chemicals for fertilizer and to fuel automobiles. Diet and nutrition are also cultural hazards. By choosing to participate in this type of behavior, people subject themselves to many types of hazards. Hazards of drug use are obvious; crime, violence, illness, loss of job opportunities, and the reduction of overall productivity are some of the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse.
