Success is a goal that everyone, no matter their age, wishes to achieve. Education is essential if one wishes to become success in life, but one’s motivation to progress onto additional education can vary depending on how they are influenced by their day to day environment. LaVaughn and Jolly are two character's in Virginia Euwer Wolff’s Make Lemonade who desire to be successful in life. However, their motivation for education varies depending of how they were impacted their own environment. Their family, the area where they live, and their colleagues are environments which influence their opinion and desire for a college education.
Claim 1-
A family consists of the people who are the closest; they trust in one another, and no one else in the world is as close to one another as they are. It’s no wonder that actors thank their families when receiving academy awards. A family loves and cares for all of it's members, and they push one another to become the best they can be in any given subject. LaVaughn uses the condition of Jolly’s home to fuel her ambitious flame which drives her to make herself qualified for college. “If I get out of here to college, I’ll get a good job. [...] and i’ll never see a place like this again.” (Wolff 23) As shown in this quote and stated before, LaVaughn treats Jolly’s house the same way she treats her own; a constant reminder of what will inevitably become of LaVaughn’s life if she does not work herself to the bone in order to make her dreams reality. One could say her environment is a monument of her sins-- this phrase appears in different literary works and media to commemorate one’s wrongdoings.
