Motivational author Alexander Lockhart once said, “Be a leader, not a follower” (Look Forward, Not), this is what I try to live by day in, and day out. I have been told this from a young age of being taught what I should, and should not do in the future. Lockhart emphases these words through his books known as Portable Pep Talk and Positive Charges. Becoming a leader is important, because someone needs to inforce things into the right direction. People all around the community, and world make wrong choices each day, so I believe in becoming a positive leader.
The week of June 20th-26th 2016, life hit me square in the face, when I attended the FFA WLC (Washington Leadership Conference) in Washington D.C. This has become one of the most memorable, life changing experiences, through the things I not only herd about, but seen personally. I made a bunch of new friends around the country that all share a hobby in not only agriculture, but leadership. During the five-day event, members learned how to “become effective leaders by learning their purpose, how to value people, how to take action and how to serve others” (Washington Leadership Conference). I have brought back home many new leadership skills that I learned. My largest belief from this trip is that I need to be the leader, and have others follow in a positive way. This once in a lifetime opportunity will be an experience that I will never forget as it has changed my view on things. Leadership should involve change, and I believe that people need to make a change for the better. Who would not want to be a leader? Who wants to be remembered as a person who did something about it? I do, I want to be that person that will help, when asked, and will provide assistance for the good. This is how I want to live my life, and have others understand the importance in doing what they know is

A classroom model that aligns with the above personal classroom management philosophy, is the Positive Behaviour Leadership (PBL), created by Bill Rogers (Lyons, Ford & Arthur-Kelly, 2011). The key elements that stand out within PBL, are that any disciplinary actions that are taken, allow for students to become accountable for their behaviour and choices (Brady, 2005). This is congruent with the above management philosophy, as it places students at the forefront of their education and a gives them a pivotal place in the classroom. PBL is built on the knowledge that respect should be given for both students and teachers, and that all individuals have the right to feel safe and secure (Lyons, Ford & Arthur-Kelly, 2011). Respect is an important…

My vision is to bring people together to create positive change, but this cannot happen without being able to effectively manage others to implement change. In order to become a stronger leader, I plan on integrating my values and motivations with my personal abilities in my endeavours. By playing to my strengths, as well as recognizing my personal areas of improvement, I will be able to develop confidence as a leader. I aspire to become a role model for others who want to influence change, similar to how Craig Kielburger inspired me when I was younger. An example of this is my ability to speak publically and communicate my ideas clearly.…

Many experiences in my life have changed my views in multiple ways, but by far the most life changing experience has to be when I was elected Daingerfield District Vice-President for the FFA. This experience has broadened my comfort zone of shyness and unconfidence, and as the FFA Opening Ceremonies say, it brought me “into the glorious sunlight of brotherhood and cooperation.” I finally began to realize after Greenhand Camp, my freshman year, that I might have a potential future in the FFA. With the support of my chapter, friends, family and much devoted prayer, I was able to accomplish my fears and officially announce that I was running for District Officer.…

Before I joined the FFA I never had the leadership qualities I needed to be successful, and I would have never tried to develop them. SInce I have joined the FFA my leadership abilities have skyrocketed and have pushed me out of my comfort zone, which I am thankful for now. The FFA allowed me to grow as a person, it is like my second home and my Ag teachers have been there for me through my rough patches and my most successful moments. They have taught me what it means to be a leader, and I could not have asked for anyone better. The FFA members, my peers, have been a major part in my leadership growth, and have been with me from day one, and I hope they continue beside me as we learn and grow our leadership abilities…

Kayla and I both discussed the importance of goals in being a leader. We both mentioned that leadership can be learned or that individuals may have specific traits that causes them to be recognized by followers as a leader. Additionally, Kayla noted that leadership does not require a specific role to be a leader, but I like how she stated that a leader empowers their followers. I think that this is very true as a good leader must earn the respect of their followers and motivate the team to reach team or personal goals. One difference was that Kayla mentioned in her definition is that there can be different leadership styles.…

I define a leader as someone who is able to take action, and provide commands that an organization/company needs to guide them in the right direction. The five approaches to creating a positive leadership include; being culturally aware, creating a clear, bold and simple message, invite contribute to changes, maintain personal relationship, and taking obstacles and turning them into opportunities for success. Providing an environment where a leader is culturally aware of the environment, and invites others to share their options with each other which results in innovative…

Leadership is a class I’ve always been interested in being a part of. Growing up, I was always taught to be a leader. My parents have always told me “You don’t choose to be a leader, you slowly evolve into a leader.” It’s always stuck with me and I’ve learned that I must set goals and go through struggles in life in order to learn from them. Those small things have allowed me to transform into the person that I am today.…
