Definition of Nursing
Nursing has been defined by many, all of which are positive and portray a sense of caring for those who are ill. The American Nursing Associate (2010) define nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations.” I would agree with this definition. Nurses are well-educated, knowledgeable, and competent people. Nurses are constantly analyzing what happened with each patient that day, what is currently happening, and what could possibly happen next. Nursing is a caring profession but it also encompass so much more. The purpose of this paper to discuss what the role of the nurse means to me.

Nurses are so important to society and the improvement of health care. I became a nurse because I have the desire to help people and what better way than having the knowledge to assist in the care of a patient health needs during their vulnerable state. Although there are high amounts of stress and moral distress that comes with nursing, nursing is a team effort that with collaboration of the health care system it all works out. Through my time as a nurse, I have learned that I am going to encounter a number of different types of patients through my practice, from drug addicts to dementia patients to cancer patients to new diagnosis to uncompliant patients to dying patients. Each of these patients are to be treated with autonomy, beneficence, justice, and veracity.
