Gangs And Gun Violence Analysis

In the transcript of the video, “Gangs and Guns Fuel Chicago’s Surge in Violence”, Chris Bury discusses the horror of violence during the summer, also called “the killing season.” Many promising young teenagers get caught in the crossfire which ends up with them wounded or worse. One of the teenagers named in the video was a seventeen- year- old boy named Vonzell Banks, who died during a family trip over the July 4th weekend. People are getting killed at any time. Around 11 PM the police are already getting many reports of gang shootings in the area. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says, “Officers take more illegal guns off the streets than New York and L.A… But even that has not been enough to stem the killings.” The most substantial reason for these shootings is when people arrested with guns do not go to jail because it is not a violent crime considering …show more content…
Amnesty International states that, “Gun crime in Chicago is most prevalent in communities with high rates of poverty and unemployment.” Poverty influences crime because many people do not have jobs which induce them to join gangs just to make ends meet. Lolly Bowean, a reporter for the Chicago Tribute talked to Tracy Siska, an executive director of the Chicago Justice Project, who claims that “the city has abandoned some neighborhoods and doesn’t care what happens in some communities.” The crime has gone so high up in some neighborhoods that the police have quit in trying to catch all the bad guys there. According to New York Times, young men who live in poor neighborhoods settle simple argument with violence. In neighborhoods filled with poverty, people hang onto their rank and reliability any way they can. The killings have increased from 9 percent to 20 percent since a year ago.
