The Cyclone Event
Cyclone Megi, or locally know as a typhoon, was first reported as a cyclone at around halfway though October 16 2010. It continued in a north west direction, at around the end of October 16 2010 Megi was upgraded to a category 4 cyclone. For the entirety of October 17 2010 Megi was a level 5 cyclone, the most powerful level. At approximately 11:25 am on the 18th of October 2010 cyclone Megi, currently at a category 5, hit Isabela province. As shown in figure 1.2. The island of Luzon, which is the larger land mass at the most northern part of the Philippines, was were the cyclone hit and did the most damage. This category 5 cyclone damaged 118,174 houses and destroyed 30,048 homes. The most affected area was Isabela, which was hit with the front of the storm. Isabela had a total of 72,828 houses damaged, which is over half of all houses damaged; and 25,186 homes where destroyed, which was 84% of all houses destroyed. Cagayan and Isabela suffered extensive damage during the typhoon with an estimated 90% of regional communications lost. $313,934,187.96 AUD was the total amount of damage done by the super typhoon, making it the 8th most destructive cyclone in Philippines history. Other effects Megi had on the Philippines was that all areas that were effected were forced into complete standstill, causing people not being able to go to work and provide for their family. Also all ships in Isabela were asked to remain in the ports because of unpredictable swell and rogue waves, this caused workers to not be able to do their days work. All air crafts into Isabela were canceled or delayed at least due to bad weather. Authorities have estimated that the cost of damage to agriculture and infrastructure is PHP 8.3 billion (CHF 187.64 million or USD 193 million). Approximately USD 34 million of that total was agriculture, this counted for 2.7 percent of the country 's annual
