Gender Equality For Women: Article Analysis

On May 22nd, 20141, a group of women technologists and leaders made a huge contribution in the fight for gender equality for women in technology. The brave women who dared to challenge the status quo by writing together to address the issue of gender inequality in technology were Divya Manian, Jessica Dillon, Sabrina Majeed, Joanne McNeil, Sara J. Chipps, Kay Li, Ellen Chisa, Angelina Fabbro, and Jennifer Brook2. Not only did this group of women stand in unity to produce a written open letter on feminism in technology to reach out to the public for help in addressing the issue at hand, but they did so offering solutions to help alleviate readers’ anxiety about how they could help the cause. These women persuasively and articulately grabbed the attention of their audience in an equality issue that has been and is a hard fought and intensely hard won battle of gender equality. For this group of women and their open letter, they paint a picture of the tech workplace as they experience it, and as they want their male counterparts and those outside of their workplace to see their experiences. A significant part of the act in the open letter is “diversity”, which this group of women discusses numerous times. They state that, “Encouraging greater diversity in the workspace is not lip-service to morality… it is cool to strive to work towards diversity in tech in general.4” Another important aspect of the act within this artifact is that of promoting unity amongst all tech employees to further push the call to action on diversifying the
