The Target hack of 2013 resulted in the loss of 40 million people’s credit card numbers, and the loss of 70 million people’s email address, phone numbers, and more. The majority of retail stores focus on selling their products to consumers. The security for retails stores can receive very little attention. Target was working to increase their IT security by hiring Fireeye to install a 1.6 million dollar security system. The system would send Fireeye notices of any security breaches. Fireeye would then send the area of concern to the main IT office for Target in Minneapolis. They had implemented two different companies to monitor their system. The companies had done their job to catch the malware in the system. Target could have stopped the attack if they had also upgraded their office in Minneapolis. They need to hire on more workers to monitor warnings from Fireeye.
The fact that two warnings were never investigated shows how it is needed to increase workers to address any matters that happen. They need to improve the steps their main office takes to look into possible malware attacks. This way the next attack can be taken care of before the loss of data. They also can help protect consumer data by the installation of registers that can take debit cards with chips. Target started this plan to implement the new registers after the hack.
Target has taken necessary actions to make sure this type of hack can be avoided in the future. They were already working to increase their security, but had failed have a necessary methods to monitor possible risks sent to their office.
