The world became more joyful on January 26, 1958, at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in Jefferson, Louisiana. On this day Ellen DeGeneres was born to, mother, Betty Pfeffer DeGeneres and, father, Elliot DeGeneres. Betty DeGeneres had been married for a year when she was 19 years old before meeting Elliot DeGeneres, claims, author, Lisa Lannucci. Elliot supported the family by selling insurance, and Betty contributed by carrying a variety of jobs throughout the years. Ellen also had an older brother names Vance who was four years older than she was. As Ellen grew up in New Orleans it is stated by Lannucci that she was a fairly normal child. Ellen enjoyed riding her bike, playing with toys, and listening to music, however, she was very much a tomboy …show more content…
She began college at the University of New Orleans where she began her schooling, but later dropped out after only one semester claims Lannucci. Although DeGeneres is known for her comedy, she also stands out for her sexuality. Ellen told her mother at the age of 19 that she was lesbian, feeling nothing but relief because her mom accepted her and her decision. Through this period of her life, Ellen held many jobs but realized that none would help her reach her goal of becoming a comedian. DeGeneres started her comedy journey at the age of 23 by performing for friends and family, or at local comedy clubs. Ellen decided she wanted to get her name well known and knew this is what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. To follow this path she sent a video to the show Showtime for their “Funniest Person in Louisiana Contest.” Ellen went through many rounds of the contest, and finally took the Funniest Person in America award and crown claims Encyclopedia of World Biography. After winning this award Ellen appeared on many late night talk shows such as The Tonight Show in 1986. This is when Ellen DeGeneres had gotten more popularity, with this little amount of fame came criticism. At one point Lannucci claims that DeGeneres wanted to stop her comedy because she felt as though she was not strong enough for the comedy
